Antique VERMONT Made HUNTING/TARGET Long Rifle!
Here we present an antique A. Leonard Half Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century in Saxtons River, Vermont. A. Leonard was an active gunmaker in Saxons River between about 1848 through 1860. Leonard’s rifles were often fitted with a “Warren & Steele, Albany” lock, such as this one. They were sent out with “A. LEONARD & SON./SAXTONS RIVER.VT.” marked on the barrel. Its stout octagonal barrel is in .34 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression.
This rifle features a half-length stock, double set triggers, and a heavy target barrel with provisions for a false muzzle (which was not included with the rifle). The sights provide a nice picture for target shooting with a windage adjustable front sight with a hooded fine bead and post, and a rear peep sight.
The overall condition is very good. Excellent action. The bore is in good shape for its age with sharp rifling. Solid stock. Nicely engraved lock. Legible markings. The cone of the nipple is chipped.
