Colt was one of the primary recipients for small arms contracts during the American Civil War, mostly selling many tens of thousands of their 1860 Army and 1851 Navy models. The company was also still producing lines of civilian arms to meet the demands of the home front and those soldiers wanting to privately purchase their own side arms. During the war, Colt introduced a new line for the civilian and law enforcement market, the 1862 Police Revolver. Many collectors today view these as the climax of the development of the percussion revolver with its size, firepower and aesthetic. Metropolitan Arms Co. began making a near copy of the Colt Model 1862 Police in 1864, the year much of the Colt factory burned to the ground. Very few were made, only about 2,750 by Flayderman’s estimate, between 1864-1866. Was there a connection between these dates of manufacture? Or was Metropolitan Arms Co.’s production simply stymied by the end of the Civil War? Around 1,600 of these revolvers bear the Metropolitan Arms Co. barrel marking. Some of the production was completely unmarked, while others were marked for the Union Arms Company. They were made in a variety of barrel lengths, with this barrel measuring 4-1/2 inches in length. The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape for its age. Solid grip. Numbers match. Here is a nice example of a very rare Metropolitan Arms Police Revolver. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 4-1/2 inches in length. Caliber: .36 percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
