Description:
CIVIL WAR Antique U.S. TRENTON, NEW JERSEY Contract Model 1861 Rifle-Musket

61st Massachusetts Infantry UNION SOLDIER Owned

Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1861 Rifle-Musket, manufactured under a contract held by J.T. Hodge and A.M. Burton at the Trenton Locomotive and Machine Company in Trenton, New Jersey in 1863. The M1861 is representative of the “everyman’s” rifle during the American Civil War. About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S., over 800,000 of which were made by the Springfield Armory. Estimates vary, but Flayderman estimates that 11,495 were made at the Trenton Locomotive & Machine Company.

This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War. Nevertheless, the 1861 represented new technology as it was made for use with the Minié ball, a hollow based, conical projectile that was small enough to quickly push down the muzzle of a rifled barrel and expanded to create a good gas seal unlike a solid, round ball. Almost immediately after the war, the US military switched from the old muzzle loading type weapons to the newer breech loading rifles, bringing an end to the musket as a standard frontline firearm in American history.

This example is marked “AM BURT” on the left stock flat. Amasa M. Burt of Adams, Massachusetts was with the 61st Massachusetts infantry, the last Massachusetts infantry regiment to be sent to the front. He was 29 years old when he enlisted and had previously been working as a carpenter.
The overall condition is very good. Excellent action. Clear bore, with strong rifling. This example sports a solid stock with less than average wear (nicely refinished). Cartouches remain clear on the left stock flat and are “TAB” for Theodore A. Bleknap and “AHT” for Albert H. Thompson. Sharp markings. “1863” dated lock and barrel. “US” marked lock and barrel. A nice Civil War musket with rare provenance!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 40 inches.

Caliber: .58 percussion
