Early 20th Century Siamese Infantry Rifle!
Here we present a C&R Japanese Koishikawa Arsenal made Siamese Contract Type 46 Mauser Rifle manufactured shortly after it was designed in 1903. The Koishikawa Arsenal, formally Imperial Japanese Army Tokyo Arsenal, was an arsenal in the Koishikawa area of Tokyo. Facing the threat of Western colonial expansionism in Southeast Asia during the latter part of the 19th century, King Rama V of Siam, which is now Thailand, sought new weapons as part of a modernization program to ensure the kingdom's independence. After experiments with other rifles, the Siamese military decided to purchase a Mauser rifle based on the Gewehr 98 design as their principal service rifle.
Through several modifications, adaptations, and using various cartridges, the Siamese Mausers served as the main infantry weapon of Siam until after World War II. Siam's king, Rama V (Chulalongkorn), considered modernization an important check against French colonial expansion from Indochina and British colonial expansion from Malaya following territorial concessions forced upon Siam by both powers. Many countries yielded to pressure from France and Britain and refused to sell Siam modern weapons. Despite Britain and France's efforts, Siam managed to buy a license to build Mauser's Gewehr 98 rifle. However, Siam lacked the necessary manufacturing capability. But, Japan did have the required capability and Siam contracted with Japan's Koishikawa arsenal to build their rifles.
Over the years, this rifle has erroneously been referred to as the “Type 45” rifle. This confusion was driven by the fact that this Type 46 rifle is chambered in “Type 45 8x50mm” ammunition.
This example has been around the block. Strong action. Bright, rifled bore. Solid stock, contains above average wear, has been refinished. Hand markings on the buttstock are legible. A plaque is inlaid on the bottom of the stock.
