Description:
Mounted Weapons Display Board. Collection of 8 pipe tomahawks and war axes. May or may not have been Native made but are representative of the style. Board 48” x 52”.

1.  1860s Osage style war axe with cross cutout in blade. Tacked stem with hide and red stroud adornment. Blade 10”, 24” with a later added beaded drop having long fringe.  32”L. 

2. 1860s style pipe tomahawk with cast head and haft having inlaid pewter, bands and rectangles. Head 7” haft 20”. 

3. 1880s style Crow war tomahawk that features a forged iron spontoon blade with a turtle clan cutout and blue trade cloth wrapped haft with old brass tacks. The head with widely spaced upward curled basal processes. There is a small bundle of old hawk bells and 3 black bear claws tied onto the butt end of the haft. The blue stroud cloth is an early style sold by the Hudson Bay Trade Company and ends in a striped design with 4 brass conchos. Head 9” overall 21”.

4. 1870s style pipe tomahawk. Blade having weeping heart. Haft being file burnt and having pewter inlays in the form of a diamond. Head 9”, haft 23”. 

5. 1860-1870s style English pipe tomahawk in the style of Ute Indians in southern Colorado. Features a forged iron head with a wide, double flare edged blade and double filed rings at the bottom of the pipe bowl. The haft is adorned with large square shanked brass tacks. Head 8 ½” overall 18 ½”. 

6. 1750-1760s style French made halberd pipe tomahawk in the style of the Powhatan Tribe in eastern Virginia. It is the earliest known style of tomahawk that was traded with eastern Indian tribes. The forged blade has artful circular piercings and a weeping heart cutout. The walnut haft is dense, with forged iron straps and old nails. The smoking tip is steel. The pipe bowl is cast, and butt welded to the top of the haft. 28”.

7. 1860-1870s style spontoon pipe tomahawk in the style of the Kiowa. Features a forged head with downward curled basal processes and excellent file work. The hickory handle was made from a tree branch and concentric circles are visible at the top where ethe smoke channel pith was burned out. The small wooden clean out plug is still intact, and the haft is adorned with hot file brandings and brass tacks. The small beaded drop is a later addition. 22” overall. 

8. 1870s style forged iron trade axe tomahawk in the style of the Kiowa in Oklahoma. Features a forged iron head. The haft tapers from oval-round to a flatter shape near the gripping section and has a large, pierced hole that held a drop of feathers or beads at one time. There is one large brass tack on each side of the haft near the head. Head 8”.
