I am pleased to offer this Springfield Model 1873 "Trapdoor" carbine, which came from the estate of Chief Split Cloud, who passed away in 1980. (aged 96) Chief Split Cloud was an American Indian performer and sharp shooter in Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show. He later started his own small Wild West Show in his hometown of Cashtown, Pennsylvania. Information from his obituary can be found on Google. A yard long photo of the Wild West Show performers is also included. I am not sure when this photo was taken, but the Wild West Show had a 30-year run, which started in 1883. Chief Split Cloud would have been a young man in his twenties.
The Springfield carbine is in very good condition for it's age. No cracks in the black walnut stock and no signs of rust on the metal. The action works perfectly. Chief Split Cloud was very proud of this rifle and he apparently took very good care of it. I would love to take this gun on the Antiques Road Show. A certificate of appraisal will accompany the Springfield carbine. Happy to answer any questions.
