Description:
PRICE REDUCED. Early J. M. Marlin Ballard Pacific Model No. 5, S.N. 5766; This fine old Pacific rifle is chambered in the big Ballard .45-100 caliber and is factory fitted with an extra heavy 30” octagonal barrel measuring 1.180” at the breech/1.070” at the muzzle and the caliber is stamped into the barrel. This barrel is almost as heavy as the Montana 5 ½ model and has a near perfect mirror bore; I rate it as a 9.5 out of ten, based on my naked eye (no bore scope). The rifle weighs about 11-12 pounds. The barrel still retains very light bluing and the edges are sharp. The receiver, lever and buttplate are mostly a mottled grey with no finish. The rifle has the wonderful double set triggers that Ballard rifles are known for. The crescent buttstock has a warm pleasing color with many small character marks, including the usual small hairline crack in the wrist at the butt of the receiver.

The rifle was obviously used and well cared for by a hunter of long ago, for the forearm is heavily worn where the rifle balances at the point where one carries the rifle with one hand. The oversize barrel also makes the forearm wood very thin and the forearm has been repaired and partially lost in places – see pictures. The original Ballard factory sights have been replaced with a set of fine target sights: the front sight is an original Ballard windage adjustable sight with a removable spirit level and the rear sight is a (non-factory) period vernier thumbscrew adjustable tang sight. A filler blank has been added to the factory rear sight dovetail. The cleaning rod appears to be original. Brass and reloading dies are available for an additional $200.

A nice, well preserved, heavy barreled Ballard Pacific rifle in a large and desirable caliber.
