Description:
Make: Colt

Model: Single Action Army, US Cavalry Model

Serial Number: 133583

Year of Manufacture: 1890

Caliber: .45 Colt

Action Type: Single Action Revolver

Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “Colt’s Pt. F.A. Mfg. Co. Hartford, Ct, U.S.A.”. The right side of the barrel under the ejector rod housing is marked with a partial serial number “3583” and the underside is marked "R.A.C.",  “P” and “K”. The face of the ejector rod housing has a "K". The left side of the frame has the 3-line patent mark: “Pat. Sept. 19. 1871 / " July. 2.-72”/ " Jan. 19.-75, and “U.S.” The forward of the trigger guard has the serial number "133583" and “K”. The bottom of the frame is marked "R.A.C.", "133583" and under the trigger guard is the assembly number "1494". The loading gate is also numbered "1494". The rear of the frame under the grips is marked "K".  The cylinder is marked with "3583",  “P”,  “R.A.C.”. There is an “O” above the firing pin hole on the back of the frame. The bottom toe of the backstrap is marked "133583" and "K". The bottom of the left side wood grip is marked "R.A.C."

Barrel Length: 7 ½”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a fixed blade. The rear sight is a notch in the top strap.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are one piece smooth wood and still have the "R.A.C." inspection mark on the bottom of the left side. There is age darkening and normal wear, with only slight shrinkage and minor loss at the bottom corners. These are obviously original to the gun and fit the metal very well.

Type of Finish: Blue & Case Colored

Finish Originality: There is no evidence of a refinish, and there is a good deal of original blueing and case color remaining.

Bore Condition: The bore is above average for this age revolver. The rifling is deep and strong, and there is some pitting, mainly on the bottom of the bore.

Overall Condition:  NRA Antique Fine+  with 90% bright original blue on the barrel and ejector rod housing, 80% original blue on the cylinder.  The frame has 50% case color remaining, with bright case colors in protected areas and mottled colors on the more exposed areas. The hammer has sharp checkering with 85% case colors remaining. The trigger guard and backstrap have some color remaining but have aged to a mostly dark silver to brown patina. There are a handful of small and scattered spots of rust on the entire gun. The wooden grips have minor wear and each has a dent in the middle and some loss at the bottom corners. The screws are all in excellent condition with some to all of their finish remaining and heads undamaged. Overall the gun is in remarkable shape for an issued Cavalry gun.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The springs are strong and the lock up/timing is remarkably tight. We did not fire this handgun.

Our Assessment:  This is an exceptional example of a late production, U.S. contract, Colt Single Action Cavalry Model revolver. This gun has all matching serial numbers, all correct Colt proof and inspection marks, and much of the original finish remaining. A fine addition to any collection of early Colt Revolvers.
