This standard .303 Savage caliber 26" round barrel rifle has serial number 100XX. According to the fairly recent very detailed book A COLLECTORS GUIDE TO THE SAVAGE 99 RIFLE by David Royal, Serial numbers approx 10000 to 10300 were serial numbered in 1898. This one numbered well BELOW 10100 is clearly one of these rare and desirable Antique Savage 1899s! It is the first I've ever seen or heard of still in existence today. It comes with a Savage Arms Historical Service letter showing this rifle by serial number, barrel shape and caliber "was completed and accepted from the factory to the warehouse at Savage's Utica, New York facility on February 1, 1899. Following acceptance, it was shipped on February 1, 1899 to the original consignee shown to be Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Company of Chicago, Illinois." There is more generic information about this rifle included in the letter. Additionally, this early 1899 is in fine condition inside and out. The barrel retains most of the original deep factory blue with minor thinning+ and also displays crisp early markings. It has the original buckhorn rear sight with Rocky Mountain blade front sight (for some reason installed backward). The receiver shows some good aged blue on the top regions along with the upper tang and where the lever attaches. There is even some very light and faded traces of case color on the upper lever. The stock and forend are fine showing light handling only and show only the most minor of chipping and barely a 1/4" crack coming back from the upper tang- usually these are badly chipped and cracked in this area resulting from the cross bolt through the butt stock attaching the stock to the receiver- changes in humidity and temperature cause pressure in this area until cracks form. Tight action and good brass rotor spring in the receiver. Excellent, fairly bright bore with sharp rifling all the way through. I'm not sure how many of these 300 original 124 year old Savage rifles still exist, but there can't be many...and this would have to be one of the best condition examples. I don't ever expect to see another in any condition. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: SAVAGE Model: 1899 ANTIQUE PRE-1899 Serial Number: 100XX Barrel Length: 26 Condition: FINE Bore Condition: EXC |
