ONE OF ONLY 290 MADE BY COLT! 1878 DOUBLE ACTION SHERIFF MODEL, 4" BARREL, .45 COLT CALIBER, BLUE FINISH, #13XXX, FACTORY LETTER, SHIPPED 1885. According to Don Wilkerson's excellent and detailed book COLT'S DOUBLE ACTION REVOLVER MODEL OF 1878, only 290 4" ejectorless blued finished .45 Colt caliber revolvers were made. The Colt letter verifies that this revolver with blue finish, 4" barrel, .45 Colt caliber and rubber stocks was shipped to Hartley & Graham, New York, New York on April 16, 1885 as a single order of 1 same type guns in shipment. This example is in nice, unmessed with condition having never been over-cleaned or steel wooled etc. It still has some good blue in the protected areas of the frame, recoil shield, loading gate, cylinder flutes and protected portions of the barrel top etc. with the balance of the gun mostly gray with some small areas of the cylinder that look like minor rust had formed at some time and was simply wiped off. Correct sharp two line barrel address on the barrel top and small 45 CAL marking on the front left side of the trigger guard. Screws and cylinder pin are excellent, grips are basically excellent showing only very light wear. Single and double action mech. works perfectly, front sight has not been filed or altered and the bore is fine+-excellent. Nice example of a super rare Colt variation!
