Description:
VERY EARLY, SPECIAL ORDER 1876 .45-75 CAL. "OPEN TOP" OCTAGON RIFLE WITH SET TRIGGER AND SLING  AND SWIVELS, #3XX, FACTORY LETTER, SHIPPED 1877. The letter from the Cody Firearms Museum verifies the octagon barrel, set trigger and sling and swivels. It was received in the warehouse September 6, 1877 and shipped September 13, 1877. According to the Winchester Handbook by George Madis, open top receivers made without provision for dust covers were standard through serial number 1600 after which dust covers were an option. After serial number 3000 dust covers are more common. This is one of the lowest serial numbers I've seen and perhaps the lowest to have a set trigger with sling and swivels. The sling and swivels option is rarely seen on any model rifle, but especially so on the 1876. Of the almost 64,000 1876s made, only 4562 were ordered with set triggers. The butt stock is excellent showing light wear and has the rear sling swivel inletted with two screws to hold the swivel plate as on military models. The forearm shows some light wear to the bottom but is generally fine with the front swivel correctly fastened to the forend cap. The leather sling has brass fittings and if not original is certainly very old yet still in fine condition. The receiver shows some very thin blue on the sides with better blue in the protected areas around the side plates and nice blue on the loading gate. Screw heads appear unturned (!) and the set trigger retains the set screw and functions as it should. The brass lifter is not dinged or polished and shows an uncleaned mellow patina. The mag tube is mostly an uncleaned gray/brown and the barrel has some good aged blue on the lower portion above the mag tube with the balance also gray/brown. Fine markings on the barrel top and upper tang. It is mounted with a buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and a typical Winchester small blade front sight. Tight action with strong safety notch in the hammer and surprisingly excellent bore that is only a little dark, but not pitted. This is a really fine, very early special order open top 145 year old Winchester. $6850
