With Brass Patchbox, Butt Plate, & Barrel Band
Here we present an antique U.S. Sharps New Model 1859 Carbine, made circa 1859 and still in its original percussion format. This is a rare and early example of the Sharps Model 1859 Carbine that utilized brass for the butt plate, patch box, and barrel band. According to Flayderman, the brass hardware variant constituted approximately 3,000 carbines, while Sellers puts that number at approximately 6,000. Regardless, a most interesting possibility for this carbine is its association with the state of Georgia just prior to the American Civil War. In November 1860, Georgia ordered 2,000 of these—through the Macon, Georgia dealer/agent D.C. Hodgkins & Son—and there is record that at least 1,600 of them were received by December 1860 and issued mostly to cavalry units (the 1st and the 5th Cavalries and the 2nd and 57th Infantries; it is thought that the additional 400 carbines were also received). Those Georgian carbines lacked the Ordnance Department inspection markings that the Federal contracts were marked with, naturally. This one lacks those inspection markings. In all, over 100,000 Sharps rifles and carbines were purchased and used prior to and during the American Civil War.
The overall condition is very good. Original finish/patina. Strong action. The bore is in good shape for its age: reflective of light with strong rifling. This example sports a solid stock with an average amount of wear (minor scuffs and dings). Some markings are worn (left frame) while most remain clear and legible. The top receiver tang is cracked at the rearmost screw and remains firmly attached. The number of the barrel matches that on the receiver tang.
