Description:
DWM Model 1906 PORTUGUESE NAVY Contract GERMAN LUGER Pistol C&R
WORLD WAR I Era with “R.P./ANCHOR” Marked Chamber
Here we present a C&R DWM Model 1906 Luger Pistol, made in Berlin, Germany and later remodeled to represent a rare Portuguese Navy variant. This contract was started under the monarchy of Portugal but only a few were completed before King Victor Manuel II was overthrown in favor of a republic style of government. As a result, DWM changed the royal Portuguese cipher that graced the first few chambers to an “R.P.” over an anchor. Still, fewer than 1,000 are known to have been made, making them very rare and collectible.
This pistol was a Model 1906 that has been altered to match the majority of characteristics so as to fill a gap in a collection that might otherwise have gone unfilled. The toggle is marked “DWM” and the chamber bears the “R.P.” over the anchor that marked the republican production of guns. The serial number is within the range of 1 to 1000 and the entire serial number is marked on the barrel and frame while the last two digits are on the other numbered parts. “CARREGADA” (loaded in Portuguese) marked extractor. The lower position of the safety on the frame is polished and otherwise unmarked. The magazine is nickel plated with a wooden base marked “Cal 9 m/m”. This piece lacks the “MP” proof.
The overall condition is very good. Refinished and as described above. The grip safety sear block is chipped. Excellent action. Bright bore with nice rifling. Fine grips, secure and sharply checkered. The numbers match throughout with the exception of the grip panels which are numbered “53” rather than “33”.
