Description:
VERY HARD TO FIND EARLY MODEL 1895 ROUND BARREL RIFLE IN BIG .40-82 CALIBER, #135XXX, MADE 1896. Fine example that came out of right here in Montana, this one is chambered for the powerful .40-82 cartridge which is simply the long .45-90 (2.4") case gently necked down to .40 caliber. It was mainly a western caliber that found favor with big game hunters after elk, moose and grizzly bears etc. This one shows fine lightly aged barrel and magazine blue. It is fitted with an original buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and a Marble No.2 small blade/bead front sight. The receiver is an uncleaned mottled gray/brown with some good blue on the loading gate. All excellent markings, Stock and forend are fine with only light handling wear and good wood to metal fit. The action is tight and the half-cock safety notch on the hammer holds fine. The bore is excellent with fine rifling all the way through.  Nice early example in a big caliber.
