DESIRABLE AND RARE FLAT TOP TARGET NEW SERVICE REVOLVER, .45 COLT, 7 1/2" BARREL, #305XXX, MADE 1920. Of the approx. 356,000 New Service revolvers made by Colt from 1898 to World War II, only about 3,400 were flat top target models with adjustable sights and fleur-de-lis checkered walnut grips. Considering that these were made in several calibers- .38-40, .44 Russian, .44-40, .44 Special, .45 ACP, .455 Eley, .45 Colt etc.- each variation becomes quite limited in numbers made. This example is in particularly fine condition retaining most of the high polish blue overall with only a smudge of gray/brown by the rampant colt stamping on the left side of the frame and some edge wear from normal handling. Has the classy checkered back strap and front strap plus the checkered trigger. Exc. markings including the correct last patent date of 1905. Exc. screws, tight action and exc. bore. Grips show very light handling wear only. These target models were made without lanyard swivels in the butt. Good fire blue on the hammer back and trigger. Beautiful hand fitting and polishing that way typical of the Inter-World Wars period of prosperity in the United States.
