ABOUT MINT, UNFIRED RARE .38 DOUBLE ACTION PERFECTED MODEL, #57XXX, MADE 1909-1920. According to the excellent book STANDARD CATALOG OF SMITH AND WESSON, 4TH EDITION, "This model was reportedly popular in Central and South America, with many exported, making it somewhat scarce in the U.S." Serial numbers ran from 1 - 59,400 making this a fairly late model, yet still having the early features of the standard model- some later production examples have some internal changes and an added patent date of 1914, this one's last date is Sept. 14, 09. The perfected model is the only top break model to have both a barrel latch release on the top strap AND a side thumb release as found on all modern S&W side swing cylinder revolvers. The chambering was the .38 S&W cartridge (not to be confused with the longer .38 Special) and the cylinder held 5 rounds. This example has a 4" barrel and S&W embossed hard rubber grips. It retains about all the high polish blue, including the front face of the cylinder, and has nice case colors on the hammer and trigger. The barrel, frame, top latch and cylinder have matching numbers. Aside from a barely discernable cylinder line and a few tiny marks in the butt that you have to look carefully to see, it is factory new overall. These rarely show up in any condition and this one is a gem.
