This gun is a Cavalry model purchased by the military and inspected by O. W. Ainsworth. This is a superb example of a Custer era Colt. Original blue remains in the protected areas and traces of case colors on the frame. Grips are excellent with a coat of varnish added at some point during its use. Cartouches are still visible. This gun falls in the 5th lot issued to the cavalry where Lot 5 & 6 are the guns issued to the 7th cavalry and could have been used at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. This gun comes with a letter from noted expert John Kopec authenticating this gun as completely correct with only a coat of varnish added long ago. Mr. Kopec goes on to say there are several guns in very close proximity to the serial number that were survivors of the battle of the little big horn. He says “We feel very confident that our subject revolver #4936 may have also participated in this battle, but has survived to this day because of having been issued to either the Reno or Benteen troops which had a greater survival route." This is one of the very finest Custer era Colt Single Action Armies that we have ever owned! SOLD Antique: Yes |
