Here we have an honest and hard working Browning Double Auto "Twelvette" semi auto shotgun chambered in 12 gauge. The Double Auto was made in three versions. The initial model was manufactured with a steel receiver. These are referred to as the “Standard” Model and were manufactured from 1952–1960. A “Lightweight” model was manufactured from 1952–1956 at which point it was rechristened and marked “Twelvette.” In 1957 an even lighter model, the “Twentyweight,” was introduced. Both the Twelvette and Twentyweight have aluminum-alloy receivers with various names such as “Duralumin” and “Hiduminium.” The Double Auto is the only gun Browning ever produced with a unique “recessed” rib. This is a solid, non-ventilated rib with a deep channel cut down its length to reduce weight. This particular example is a Twelvette with the aluminum alloy receiver. The gun is in very good condition overall with there being more wear on the wood than on the metal. The 28 inch barrel has an excellent bore that was originally choked full and has been opened up to a modified fixed choke with the full length recessed rib. An aluminum bead is used for the front sight. The wood has earned some character marks over the years but nothing too bad. The butt plate appears to be original and has a little damage at the bottom. This is an honest hard working gun that has many years of hunting left in it and as such would make a great addition to an existing collection.
