The Springfield, Manila, and Rock Island Arsenals altered approx. 8,000 Krag carbines (mostly 1899 Models) to Constabulary configuration between 1906 and 1916. In addition to the Philippine Constabulary, these interesting rifles were supplied to ROTC and other school units. The alteration consisted of placing the carbine in a shortened (by 8"") Model 1898 rifle stock (which had to have the lightening cut in the barrel channel filled), turning the carbine muzzle down to fit the Krag or Model 1905 bayonet, and reforming the front band to properly fit the barrel. This totally correct Krag Philippine Constabulary carbine is one of the very desirable ones that was altered by the Springfield Armory as evidenced by the J.F.C. stock cartouche. The carbine has a correctly altered stock, muzzle, and front band and is equipped with the correct Model 1901 carbine rear sight. The gun has a pleasing blue-brown appearance. The stock is very good with issue dents and dings, a strong cartouche, and no chips or cracks. It is equipped with a WWI era Model 1907 sling. The only drawback to this rifle is that the chamber has been reamed oversize (DO NOT SHOOT) but this is not evident unless the barrel and chamber interior are carefully examined. The action functions correctly. Except for the chamber, this would be a $3000 Philippine Constabulary Krag. The significantly reduced price reflects this fact. This scarce rifle would fill your collection at a very reasonable price.
