This important carbine's serial number falls right in the middle of the 7th Cavalry divisions 33,000-43,700 issue range. This rifle was issued to 7th Cavalry of which Custer ws a member. According to existing records this carbine was manufactured in February 1873-4, and subsequently issued. Companies “D”, “I” and “K” of Custer’s 7th Cavalry were the last to receive their carbines. Companies “D” & “K” were with Benteen and Reno while Company “I” died with Custer in 1876. .45-55 Carbine cal., 22" barrel with block-blade front and graduated-leaf rear (marked "C" for Carbine) sights lacks breech proof markings (correct for this early serial range); early narrow receiver has Type 1 high-arch breechblock marked "Model/1873" at hinge, 3-click tumbler; flat lockplate marked "(spread-wing eagle)" and "U.S./Springfield/1873" under trapdoor latch; iron fittings include 2-pc. trigger guard without sling swivel, curved buttplate marked "US" at top, sling bar and ring opposite lock, single spring-retained band with stacking swivel. Stock is an original 1st Model stock with the "(circle)P" proof and a rack number "12" stamped behind the tang. Cartouche is not visible. This is an original 1st Model Carbine, and only the rear sight (M1879), swivel bar and firing pin (bronze) have been replaced, probably for period upgrade or repair. Mfg'd ca. 1873-74. Condition is good retaining no original finishes but overall dark brown showing general light oxidation, peppering to trapdoor and lockplate partially obscuring markings. Stock is sound having been smoothed and re-oiled. There are minor wood losses in front of the trigger plate and to left of receiver. No cleaning rod holes are drilled under the Type 1 buttplate. Two holes were drilled in the bottom of the stock, one behind the barrel band and one in front of the buttplate. Functioning type 1 hammer is slightly bent to the left. All parts function properly. Action is crisp, bore is bright with sharp rifling but for 3" at muzzle with moderate erosion in rifling. Antique so ships to your address.
