Pittsburgh Loaded with Engraved German Silver Ornament Here we present an antique Long Rifle by John McCamant of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, made circa the mid-19th Century. More is known of James McCamant, who was at least in one point in business with John. One could presume that they were brothers. Per James Biser Whisker’s book Arms Makers of Western Pennsylvania, James launched trade under his own name out of the house of William McCamant (likely the father) in Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1797. James and John co-owned a brass foundry in Brooke County, Virginia (what would later become West Virginia) this borders Washington County, PA. As a sort of sidenote in our research, we discovered an account in a book called Notes on the Settlement and Indian Wars of Western Virginia and Pennsylvania by Joseph Doddridge that describes wolf attacks in Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1807 and a John M’Camant (McCamant) was killed by a rabid wolf. It could very well be the John that James was partnered with, but it could also be a relation. This rifle features a 34 5/8 inch octagonal barrel in .40 caliber. Half-stock, double set triggers, and loads of engraved German silver round out this rifle. The top of the barrel is marked “JOHN McCAMANT/PITTSBURGH”. The overall condition is fair. The iron parts are dark with patina and a bit scaley. The markings on the barrel are faint but legible. The action is strong. The double set trigger has to be activated for the hammer to be cocked. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling. The stock shows various repairs to slivers and little cracks throughout. There is a small fracture at the toe of the butt stock. This rifle looks to have been used hard but it remains a handsome piece by a maker with seemingly few pieces ever made. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 34-5/8 inches. Caliber: .40 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
