Description:
This is a late WW2 Royal Ordnance Factory Fazakerley Enfield No.5 Mk.1 Jungle Carbine in .303 British complete with an original WW2 British Military sling.  This Jungle Carbine is a WW2 original with a matching bolt, with the only part that appears to be a newer replacement being the flash hider assembly.  The No.5 Mk.1 Jungle Carbine was developed for use in the close quarters fighting in the jungles of the Pacific theater during the last stages of WW2 in 1944.  It was issued to British, Australian, and British Commonwealth troops.  It was generally well-liked and effective as it was well-made, reliable, and accurate enough for most of the fighting that was done with it.  The only complaint was the stiff recoil generated from the .303 British round in such a lightweight carbine.  In addition to being lighter than a regular rifle at 7lbs 1oz versus 8lbs 11oz, the Jungle Carbine was also much shorter than the standard Enfield rifle of the time, 39.5" inches versus 44.4" inches for the No.4 Mk.1 or Mk.2.  The No.5 Mk.1 was designed with some unique features such as a steel buttplate with a central rubber insert to reduce felt recoil, a conical flash hider / front sight assembly with protective ears that also integrated the bayonet lug, and a lightened receiver that was machined to remove any excessive weight, a hollow bolt handle to also reduce weight, a lightened triggerguard and magazine surround, and a carbine-specific flip-up rear ladder sight.  When the rear sight was folded down it had a peep aperture good to 100 meters or so, and when flipped up had range graduations from 200 to 800 meters.  The stock design consisted of three pieces, the buttstock, the forestock, and an upper handguard 9" inches in length.  This bolt action repeater used the same action design as the Enfield No.4 Mk.1/2, a cock-on-closing design that also fed from the same magazine as any Enfield rifle of that period. The No.5 Mk.1 would remain in production after the end of WW2 until 1947.  This particular example is in good condition overall, retaining it's original factory finishes and all it's original parts except for the replacement flash hider.  It has not been thru an arsenal overhaul like most you will see.  The stove-black enamel finish shows some moderate finish wear on all of the steel parts of the gun, but it is still very handsome as an issued and combat-used weapon.  All of the factory markings are still intact and legible, as-are the British proofs and serial numbers.  The serial number of "N5798" is marked on the left side of the receiver as well as the back edge of the bolt handle.  The left side of the reciever is also marked on the left side "No5Mk1 ROF(F)" above the manufacture date "6/45" and the serial number mentioned before.  The bore in this Jungle Carbine is average to good with strong rifling throughout but with some light minor pitting in the grooves.  It should still shoot very accurately with the proper ammunition. The original stock set on this No.5 Mk.1 is in very good to excellent condition.  It is totally free of cracks or major damage, showing only some minor handling marks and dings would expect on a military issued weapon from WW2.  All of the stock hardware is intact and in good condition, including the special Jungle Carbine-specific buttplate.  The action on this carbine is smooth and slick, and the bolt turns into battery nice and tight.  All of the controls on the weapon are in perfect working order, and there is no doubt that this Jungle Carbine will still function and fire just like it did when it left the factory new over 77 years ago.  This Fazakerley Enfield No.5 Mk.1 comes with an originalsling and one original 10 round magazine which is in excellent condition with a strong follower and clean feed lips.  If you have been looking for a nice original WW2-production Jungle Carbine that you can enjoy as both an investment and shooter, this Fazakerley-made example would be an excellent choice.     NOTE: SINCE PICTURES WERE TAKEN A FACTORY FRONT SIGHT BLADE HAS BEEN INSTALLED.
