Description:
SOLD *** HAWKEN traditional Rocky Mountain Rifle by Pedersoli, .50 Caliber, NEW with paperwork

Pedersoli’s version is a strong reproduction of the refined Hawken Rifle, with its .50 Caliber 28 ½” barrel with 8 grooves and 1:48 twist.  The overall rifle is 44 ¼” long and weighs 8.6 lbs. It shoots a .490 or .495 round ball depending on patch thickness. The stock is Ozark black walnut and has an inlaid hinged brass patch box and brass butt plate with heel extension and other brass furniture.  True to the St.Louis Hawken, it has a double set trigger and adjustable buckhorn rear sight for greater accuracy.

With the advent of the percussion cap in 1807, and the M1819 Hall Rifle adapted for it, that rifle was still long and unwieldy when the mode of transportation became prevalent for horseback.  Following Lewis & Clark’s published journal of their expedition, one member of whom was Jedediah Smith, and together with John Colter, the two men would be the most responsible for opening up 80% of the unknown territories to Euro-Americans. It became obvious horseback and not waterways was the new mode of transportation for the fur trade at the time . The need was for a shorter gun for horseback and for a bigger caliber for large and dangerous game. In St.Louis, the Hawken brothers answered this need with their “Hawken Rifle.”

HISTORICALLY ACCURATE: This Hawken reproduction is historically accurate. In the book, The Great Guns, by Harold L.Peterson and Robert Elman, on page 171 referring to the J & S Hawkens rifles of St.Louis, “Arms collectors and historian James E. Serven who has examined a good number of these arms, describes them as averaging .50 caliber or slightly more… Iron trim was standard, as was a rounded buckhorn rear sight, slightly slanted to the rear. Except for the earlist specimens, which were flintlocks, these were percussion guns …”  The earliest ones had 38 ½” barrels; by 1840, 36” barrels were the trend (including Kit Carson’s gun of that period); and by the very end of the era, barrels were 34 and often shorter.”

True to the originals, the metal work is color case-hardened and plain with no fancy engraving.  These half-stocked rifles were first furnished with “tiger-striped” Missouri hard maple stained dark with walnut husks and later with Ozark black walnut, usually of very straight grain to withstand the recoil.
