Description:
This is a very rare all-original WW2 Nazi SS-marked DSM 34 .22 caliber training rifle made by Mauser Oberndorf.  Per Adolf Hitler's plan in 1933, an essential part of raising Germany to it's rightful place in the world would be the creation of a military force to enforce the nation's will and defend it's borders.  As Germany was still under the watchful eye of the world which precluded openly producing military weapons or raising a large army, Germany instead turned to the production of small caliber "sporting" rifles and weapons for training it's future soldiers.  All of the shooting organizations of Germany were to be centralized with a common goal, and run by authorities outside the government (but still under Hitler's control) to avoid attention from foreign observers.  The first thing that the goverment wanted to standardize was the training rifle itself.  The training rifle needed to be .22 caliber and mirror the planned K98 military rifle in size and feel.  It was to be called the Deutsches Spotmodell or DSM.  Production of this trainer would be spread around to help numerous gunmaking firms in Germany that desperately needed the income after the economic depression of the 1920's.  Numerous German gun firms came up with designs and submitted them, but the Mauser DSM 34 was the official chosen design by the Government and the SA.  The DSM 34 ended up being produced by no less than 17 firms during the 1930's and WW2, with the vast majority of these weapons being purchased by many of the different organizations or para-miltary groups within Nazi Germany rather than individuals.  These rifles were used for marksmanship training, as prizes for shooting compeitions, and political gifts.  Many of them were property marked by the organizations that owned them.  Most DSM 34's remained in service as trainers up until the last days of WW2 and were spread out all over Germany.  As American soldiers moved thru Germany on their way to defeating the Nazis these rifles became very popular war trophies, with many thousands captured and sent back to the States, either thru the mail system or with the soldier himself.  This particular Mauser DSM 34 is particularly rare and sought-after in that it was the property of the notorious S.S. or Shutzstaffel.  The right side of the buttstock is stamped with "RFSS" in a circle that is a hair under 7/8" of an inch in diameter.  This is the property mark associated with the Reichsfuhrer S.S. training schools and was used to train S.S. members in how to handle and shoot a rifle.  It is 100% original and has not been "improved" or altered in any way except for a "duffle cut" under the lower band.  This was done to make the rifle fit in the standard size mailing box that U.S. soldiers had access to when in-theater during WW2.  The original Mauser gloss-blue factory finish is still very attractive and bright, showing only light finish wear and handling marks in various places.  The patina on this Mauser is consistent and handsome.  All of the factory stampings are crisp and clear, and all of the numbered parts are matching.  The bore in this DSM 34 is in excellent shape overall and shows strong and sharp rifling throughout the barrel.  The original stock is also in excellent condition outside of the hidden "duffle-cut" and free from any cracks, chips, or major damage.  All of the original stock hardware is intact and in good condition overall.  The action on this Mauser is smooth and slick, and the numbers-matching bolt locks into battery perfectly.  This Mauser DSM 34 functions 100% like the day it left the factory.  If you have been looking for a rare and sought-after weapon to add to your WW2 weapons collection, this Nazi SS-marked training rifle would be a excellent choice.
