Original WWI era Winchester 1897 Trench Gun. This iconic combat shotgun was manufactured in 1919 and is 1 of 74 that had been the property of Richmond Virginia Police Department before being sold by Ivanhoe in 2004. The 74 U.S. Trench Guns were obtained by the The Ricmond P.D. from the the Virginia National Guard in 1924, who had obtained them in 1921 from the U.S. Army. These guns were a true time capsule find when they were taken in trade from Richmond PD to Sigarms and eventually sold through an ad in Shotguns News by Ivanhoe. These shotguns only saw very limited use by the Richmond P.D. in the 80 years they were in their inventory. Nearly all of them were in good to excellent original condition and sold out very quickly. This particular gun is 100% original and unaltered since WWI with the exception of the Richmond P.D. Markings on the buttstock. The gun is in excellent mechanical condition, and shows a nice even patina consistent with its age. These rarely come up for sale and I have included a picture of page 286 of Bruce N. Canfield's Complete Guide to U.S. Military Shotguns, which explains the full unique history of the Richmond P.D. 1897 Trench guns and the serial numbers of each gun. This shotguns serial number E687833 is included in the list. This is a rare opportunity to aquire a genuine WWI Era 1897 Winchester Trench Gun with documented provenance.
