ONE OF THE MORE UNUSUAL AMERICAN-MADE PERCUSSION MUZZLELOADERS FROM THE 1970s IS THIS .54 CALIBER MOWREY GUN WORKS ALLEN & THURBER REPLICA, MADE IN OLNEY, TEXAS. These distinctive rifles feature a single trigger, 32" blued octagon barrel, very heavy brass butt plate with a Swiss curl at the toe and a brass forend. These are a copy of the rare rifle made by Allen & Thurber in the 1840s-1860s with the exception that the originals were steel instead of brass. These rifles had a very simple action with few parts (two springs, a sear and trigger) accessible by removing the brass side plate on the left side of the receiver. Connecting the hammer spring to the sear is a small oval ring that wants to slip off the sear and needs to be adjusted or filed slightly to hold better- should be an easy fix as both spring and sear are notched to hold this ring (see photo of the inside mechanism). Overall excellent condition with a fairly fancy grained piece of walnut in the stock. Sights consist of a buckhorn (needs notched sliding elevator bar) and blade. Ramrod intact. These historically accurate front-stuffers have an unusual look with great appeal- worth the price even if you don't shoot it and just hang it over the fireplace!
