Description:
The is an honest .69 Caliber Smooth Bore Musket that most likely saw action in both the Mexican War and the American Civil War. The M-1842 muskets remained in production until 1855, with Springfield Armory producing 165,970 and Harpers Ferry producing 106,629, making the total production for the M-1842 musket 272,599. The Harper's guns are always the more desirable weapons because of scarcity and  Harper's Ferry Armory's colorful history. The M-1842 also had the distinction of the being the last general issue .69 caliber smoothbore weapon to be manufactured and issued to the US military, and was superseded by the .58 caliber M-1855 rifle muskets. The M1842 is also one of the first percussion arms with interchangable part produced for the US military.  The other early percusion weapons were the Hall rifle and the 1841 Mississippi.
This is an honest antique military weapon that has the look and feel of a gun that has seen serious use.  The significant marks are visible with pitting from corrosive black powder and percussion caps.  The bore has moderate corrosion with some shine.  It will still shoot with reasonable accuracy. The ramrod used has a threaded tip for attaching a ball puller or patch weasel for clearing a fowled musket.  This ramrod has been sharpen.  The purpose of the sharpening was to jam the ramrod into the ground beside the shooter in a skirmish line.  This allowed the soldier easy access for reloading while not interfering with aiming and firinng. This gun also has several cut notches around the nose cap that spark the imagination.  Overall this is an excellent example of piece of military history from 175 years ago.
