Description:
SOLD PENDING FUNDS This .44 caliber Colt Richards conversion, serial number 199962 was produced in 1873 from one of the very last 1860 Army Revolvers made by Colt. It was later acquired by John Henry Clack who was Sheriff in West Feliciana Parish Louisiana, a few miles up the Mississippi River from Baton Rouge. He was elected Sheriff in 1892 in a reform effort against certain types of gambling and other scandals that plagued southern Louisiana and the famed Angola State Prison which was located in West Feliciana Parish. He remained Sheriff until his death one hundred years ago in 1922. He was bedridden his last few years but was still re-elected for his last term. The pistol was passed along down to an heir in New Orleans where I acquired it and the holster it had been kept in from the time he carried it as Sheriff. It has been cleaned up along the way and still shows speckled dark spots over all. It is in mint condition in terms of mechanics and has solid indexing and tight lock up. Eight inch barrel with a very decent bore. It is an interesting gun to hold in one's hand and presents well. I have attached photos of Sheriff Clack and his history starting with his birth on Panola Plantation Louisiana in 1847 and his service in the Confederate Army. This is a very serviceable antique pistol with an interesting history of a well respected Southern Lawman.
