Description:
Added to our showroom today is a nice piece of 19th century American military history. This Springfield Model 1866 with bayonet is a breechloading rifle employing the Allin trapdoor mechanism. This loading system was named for originator Erskine S. Allin, Master Armorer of the Springfield Armory. The Model 1866 represented an iterative design, one that would ultimately became the basis for the definitive Springfield Model 1873 – the first breech-loading rifle adopted by the United States War Department for manufacture and widespread issue to U.S. troops.
