Description:
This Springfield M2 was acquired from the J.M. Davis Arms Historical Museum located in Claremore, Oklahoma. It still has the metal brass identification tag attached. The museum ed off 1,200 of its more than 20,000 firearms. Due to the serial number it is a late production M2. Obviously, it was professionally modified for serious target/competition shooting due to its enhanced fore arm, heavy barrel, target sights, and a Mossberg M4 target scope. The M2 Rifle was created by the Springfield Arsenal in 1932 as a successor to the previous 1922M1 rifle. Compared to its predecessor, it featured a new bolt with adjustable headspace and a better extractor. The rear striker was fitted with a large round disk nut. The outer edges of the nut were serrated for grasping to cock the rifle manually. It also functioned as a gas deflector in the event of a ruptured case. On top of this, the trigger guard assembly and magazine mount were reworked, deleting the filler block in the magwell and installing a push button release. Officially, the rifle was marked “U.S. Springfield Armory, Cal .22, M2.” They were not drilled and tapped for scope mounts. The modified rifle shown here is in good condition overall. Unlike many modified M2 rifles, this one is still chambered for the .22 Long Rifle. Many others were converted to single shot rifles chambered for the .22 Hornet round. There is some light rust around the barrel near the muzzle, but for the rest of the barrel the bluing is in excellent shape. The bore is in pristine condition. The stock has fairly light handling wear. The front scope base is bent but still maintains a solid grip on the mount. The front lens of the scope has a slight chip in the lower left quadrant. Looking through the scope still gives a good picture however. As with all small diameter scopes, field of view is somewhat limited, but that did not stop them from being very popular back in the days of rimfire benchrest competition.
