Description:
NSN, approximately .45 cal., 33" part octagon barrel with a good bore that has mild pitting within the grooves. The barrel is turned for a no longer present bullet-starter, and has an overall mottled plum-brown patina along its length. There are vise marks along the side flats near the breech, and the barrel is marked "N. LEWIS MAKER TROY NY" behind the rear sight (Nelson Lewis was active between 1843-1888). The double-set trigger equipped, back-action lock has a mottled gray patina that has some pinprick pitting around the nipple bolster, but the German silver trigger guard, buttplate, patchbox, and wedge escutcheon are still bright. The walnut stock has numerous small handling marks and minor blemishes, as well as a stable crack running back from the pewter forend tip. Additionally, a later metal stag’s head plate was added to the cheek-piece that stands very proud of the metal. There are some further dark streaks in the wood on the buttstock. The action is fully functional, and the rifle rates good-very good overall. Antique
