Description:
Rare and handsome Boss & Co. sidelock non-ejector number 3625 made on the Woodward “Automatic” pattern action in 1881. It has Woodward patent use number 345 on the standing breech. The sidelever serves as an opener and also cocks the hammers. In the early days of hammerless shotgun development it was not unusual for customers to request that a gunmaker make an action designed by another.   ***   This handsome Boss was Sumner engraved in the then-standard Boss “house” style including elaborately carved fences. And it has a number of signature Woodward features like a Woodward style T-shaped automatic safety and the Woodward style bulbous tumbler that also doubles as a cocking indicator. An interesting and great handling double. Weighs 6lb 7oz.   ***   The 28” nitro sleeved barrels are chambered for 2-3/4” shotshells, have extractors, and are topped by a raised solid concave gamestyle rib. The bores are shiny. The right barrel is bored 0.729 with a constriction of 0.010 for Quarter choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.033. The left barrel is bored 0.731 and has a constriction of 0.015 for Light Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.033.   ***   The straight grip stock and splinter forearm are made of nicely figured English walnut. Checkering is in good condition. The forearm has a Rigby style forearm lever. Stock dimensions are 14-3/8” over the original thin horn buttplate by 1-1/2” by 2”.   ***   Cased in a period leather case with maker's label, two-piece mahogany cleaning rod, cleaning accesories, pewter oil bottle, and snap caps.   ***    You may never again have an opportunity to purchase an early Boss hammerless sidelock in this condition. It’s an interesting, unique and great handling double. Don’t let it get away!   ***   Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period and will only accept returns at buyer’s expense.
