Description:
RARE Antique J.D. DOUGALL 14 Bore PINFIRE SxS Double Barrel HAMMER Shotgun

1860 Patent “LOCK-FAST” Slide-and-Tilt SIDELEVER

Here we present a rare engraved antique J.D. Dougall 14 Bore Pinfire Double Barrel Side by Side 1860 Patent “Lock-Fast” Slide-and-Tilt Sidelever Hammer Shotgun, manufactured circa 1865 in London, England. Manufactured at the close of the American Civil War, this shotgun incorporated Dougall’s “Lock-Fast” patent action of May 7, 1860. The browned Damascus barrels have a concave rib signed “J.D. DOUGALL. INVENTOR & PATENTEE. 59 ST. JAMES’S ST. LONDON”. It has a rounded action with sidelevers, signed “DOUGALL’S PATENT LOCK-FAST” on the underside, and with backaction locks each signed “J.D. DOUGALL”. The beautiful gun has a fine classic English border and scroll engraving throughout. It also features a well figured walnut stock with a checkered grip and forearm. There are London black powder proof and reproof marks. James D. Dougall was an active gunmaker between 1864 and 1887 and had shops in both London and Glasgow.

In 1835, notable gun maker and inventor Casimir Lefaucheux patented one of the first self-contained firearms cartridges referred to as “pinfire”. This very early design included a case with ball, powder and primer, but what made it different from what was to come later in cartridge development was the “firing pin” that projected out of the side of the case. It was this pin that was struck and detonated the primer inside.

The overall condition is very good. This example has been nicely refinished. Strong action. Mirror bright bores. The stock is in excellent shape with sharp checkering and fine grained. Nicely engraved in English style. Numbers match.
