Hey Fox enthusiasts, what do we have here?  I have been an expert Fox man for almost 30 years, and this is the only Fox Sterlingworth that I have seen like this one.  “It’s a flat-side, drawbolt gun” some will say.  Well, I have seen those, and this is not a drawbolt gun.  The “drawbolt” guns were made toward the end of production for the Fox gun when Savage was trying to reduce labor and manufacturing costs by eliminating the graceful sculpting on the side of the Fox frame and changing the method of fastening the buttstock to the action utilizing a drawbolt from the butt end of the stock, a huge time saving method.  But the drawbolt guns had a machine screw with a large head that came in through the top of the top tang behind the safety, something very different than all the Fox guns preceding this method.  THIS GUN HAS THE TRADITIONAL HAND-FITTED BUTT STOCK IN COMBINATION WITH THE FLAT-SIDED ACTION, LIKELY AN EXPERIMENTAL PHASE BEFORE UTILIZING THE DRAWBOLT BUTTSTOCK.  So, if any other Fox enthusiast has ever seen one like this, please contact me to discuss.  THE A.H. FOX STERLINGWORTH---THE BEST VALUE IN THE VINTAGE AMERICAN DOUBLEGUN WORLD, BAR NONE!  Why such a bold claim?  First, the Fox Sterlingworth is the same gun mechanically as all other grades of the A.H. Fox gun, having the fewest parts and smallest action of any of its competitors.  The Fox gun is utterly reliable, the locking mechanism simple and efficient, the barrels and action made of the finest steels of its time, the wood finely fitted to the action, checkering well cut, and the balance and handling dynamics of the gun was superb.  Second, because they made a lot of them, the price is very affordable.  With so many of them out there, how do you know which one to buy?  Condition is important, and many of Sterlingworth guns were used hard and not well maintained.  IT IS EASY TO BUY THE WRONG GUN WITH COSTLY ISSUES.  At Vintage Firearms, Inc. (VFI) we inspect each gun before purchase, our 4 gunsmiths clean and service each gun as needed. Other important factors are uniqueness of features, condition of the metal, screws, wood, and bores.  We provide the most comprehensive photography and specifications in the marketplace, information that allows you to make a good choice.  Just remember, nowhere is it more apparent than in the gun world…you get what you pay for!  If you want a vintage doublegun you can rely on, buy one that is field ready and can safely shoot modern, available shotgun shells.  This Fox Sterlingworth, sn138000 built in 1935, checks all the boxes as an excellent purchase for both your shooting needs and collecting of Fox guns that are interesting and will go up in value.  See the specifications in the tables below for details but look at the photos for condition.  THIS UNIQUE FOX STERLINGWORTH RETAINS ALMOST ALL OF ITS ORIGINAL FACTORY FINISHES, INCLUDING 90% PLUS CASE COLORS, 98% BLUE, AND NEARLY ALL OF THE WOOD FINISH.  Choked M/F and weighing only 7lbs. she is an excellent field and clays gun.  Tight as new on hinge and breech face, mirror bores, perfect screws, factory 2 ¾’ chambers, and good stock dimensions.  Possibly a ONE-OF-A-KIND FOX and priced to sell.  Thanks for looking!
