Description:
Quality American-made 16-gauge hammer guns, especially with 30” barrels, are scarce.  Moreover, they are rarely found in such high condition as this Hopkins & Allen 16-gauge New Model Hammer Double Gun, s/n 41848, which was made in 1913.  H&A introduced in 1908 its New Model line of hammer and hammerless shotguns.  The New Model hammer shotguns were superior to the previous H&A-Forehand models, and they competed successfully with L.C. Smith, Remington, and Ithaca field grade hammer shotguns.

The receiver on this gun retains over 95% coverage of original case color, much of it brilliant.  The stock and forend are made of nicely grained walnut, which is unusual in field grade guns, and the finish appears to be original.  The LOP from the front trigger to the end of the original buttplate is 14 inches.  The DAC is 2 inches and DAH is 3-1/4 inches.  The cast is neutral.  The 16-point checkering is crisp.  The forend has a Deeley & Edge latch, again something not often found on field grade hammerguns. The barrels are made of decarbonized steel, similar to those of the Remington Model 1889.  The exteriors of the barrels have scattered artifacts of what was probably light rust at some point.  The bores are bright.  The boxlock action is powered by coil springs, similar to its Ithaca NIG competitor.

This gun was clearly meant to hunt upland game, which it still does very effectively.  Weighing only 7 pounds and 3 ounces, it is easy to carry and to shoulder quickly.  The barrels have 2-9/16-inch chambers and both barrels are fully open (cylinder choke).  The bore diameters of both barrels measured at 9 inches from the breech are .674 inches and the outside diameters at the muzzle are both .755 inches.  The wall thicknesses of the right barrel at 9 inches from the muzzle are (top/side/bottom) .028/.026/.038. and at the middle of the barrel are .030/.028/.038.  The wall thicknesses of the left barrel are .025;.033/.040 and .025/.033/.043, respectively.  The triggers pull at approximately 9 pounds.  The gun locks up tightly and all serial numbers match.

The price does not include shipping costs paid by buyer.  The inspection period is 7 days from receipt.  This shotgun has been fired in the field and on the range using 2-1/2-inch low pressure shells manufactured by RST Corporation for use in twist-steel and Damascus-steel-barreled shotguns.  It is strongly recommended that the new owner also use low-pressure shells, as decarbonized steel does not have the same strength as fluid-steel and was considered circa 1900 to be roughly of the same quality as twist-steel.  Moreover, as for any shotgun over a hundred-years old, it is recommended that the new owner have this gun inspected by his or her own gunsmith before firing.  Please do not hesitate to call with questions Steve at 703-625-4830.
