Here we present an antique Percussion Conversion Austrian Model 1842 Rifled Musket, made circa the late 1840s in Austria. These muskets are known to have been imported to the United States and to the Confederacy during the American Civil War. At least 25,000 of the Austrian tube-lock muskets were purchased by the U.S. Ordnance Department during the Civil War.
These muskets were originally made using the “tube lock” mechanism, essentially a very distinct percussion conversion of a flintlock gun, that was more aimed at saving money and not having to retrain an entire army than being state of the art. They were not long after considered obsolete, but the American Civil War created demand for even what was considered old technology and the Austrians were happy to be paid for their old stock. Before being exported they were converted from the tube-lock system to the more conventional percussion system via several different methods, as is this example, and many were also fitted with ramrods since the Austrian Cavalry carried theirs on their person. This example is fitted with a ramrod.
The barrel is secured to the stock by three iron barrel bands with the upper band being a double-strapped type with the integral front sight. The bands are secured bia springs that are flat on the bottom matching the flattened forend of the stock. The bayonet lug and Laukart locking system are present under the muzzle. The stock has no raised cheek-piece as is often found with the early examples.
The overall condition is very good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape for its age. This example sports a sturdy stock with an expected amount of wear (minor dents and dings). There is also a longer sliver absent from the ramrod channel just behind the foremost barrel band; it is smoothed over with use and age. Clear markings. “GDM” collector stamp is on the buttstock toe. The bayonet and sling are both in good shape.
