This is an attractively proportioned gun that has an overall plum-brown patina evenly distributed along the exposed portions of the barrel. Some traces of the original Damascus striping are still visible along the octagonal breech, aft of the wedding band transition, and British proofs are present under the wood. The engraved stock iron has a gold band, and the lockplate, marked "Portlock" ahead of the hammer, has some thin freckling and pinprick pitting along the edges. The single wedge-fastened walnut stock has a horn nosepiece, deep checkering along the forend and wrist, and an engraved steel buttplate with light pitting throughout. The action is fully functional, but the hammer spring is slightly weak. A brass-tipped oak ramrod is included. This is a very attractive fowler, and is in about very good condition overall.
