Here we have a Smith & Wesson Model 14-4 revolver chambered in .38 Special caliber. The Smith & Wesson Model K-38 Target Masterpiece Revolver Model 14 is a six-shot, double-action revolver with adjustable open sights built on the medium-size "K" frame. It is chambered for the .38 Special cartridge, and most were fitted with a 6 in barrel. First produced in 1947 and originally known as the K-38 Target Masterpiece, it was renamed the Model 14 in 1957 when all Smith & Wesson revolvers were given numerical model numbers. It is built on the same medium-sized frame (K-frame) as the seminal Smith & Wesson Model 10 ("Military and Police") revolver. The K-38 model was authorized for duty with the Los Angeles Police Department in the 1960s and early 1970s. This particular example is in excellent mechanical condition and shows some handling and use marks. The 6 inch pinned barrel has some holster wear and high edge wear. The bore is bright with strong rifling. The cylinder shows some wear and moderate turn rings. The target style wood grip panels are in generally good condition with a chip at the bottom rear of the right side. On the right grip panel there is a small chip at the rear on the edge of the channel around the checkered portion of the grip. The grip panels have lost some of their original finish in spots. The gun has a wide target hammer and trigger. Ramped blade front and adjustable rear sights. The action is very smooth and locks up incredibly tight.
This classic Smith & Wesson revolver would make a great addition to an existing collection or a strong way to start a new collection.
