Factory-Nickel OMAHA-NEBRASKA-SHIPPED Antique Colt Black Powder SAA Letter
Lettered 1885 mfr. NICKELED 7-1/2 Inch Barrel in .45!
Here we present an antique Lettered Colt Black Powder Frame Single Action Army Revolver. The factory letter lists this revolver as having a 7-1/2” barrel in .45 caliber and a scarce nickel finish when it was shipped to Lee Foied [sic] & Company in Omaha, Nebraska on February 18, 1885. “Foied” is a typo or misspelling (perhaps even in the original ledger) and should be “Fried”. Lee, Fried & Co. was a dealer in hardware, cutlery, and tinware. In the Friday, September 11, 1885 edition of the Omaha Daily Bee (page 3, bottom left) they are listed under the “Hardware” section as “Jobbers [aka wholesaler] of Hardware and Nails. Tinware, Sheet Iron, Etc. Agents for Howe Scales and Miami Powder Co. Omaha, Neb.” Eventually, the company would evolve into the Lee-Glass-Andreesen Hardware Company. This was in a day when hardware stores would regularly stock firearms for sale in addition to any other tool. Omaha was a place that seeing fast growth for a frontier town, especially with the help of the Union Pacific Railroad. Douglas County’s population in 1880 was approximately 37,645 and it ballooned to 158,008 as of 1890. It was a place of agricultural trade, especially with beef, and growing industry as well as being a last stopping point before getting into the less-than-settled Western frontier that remained in the closing years of the 19th Century and into the 20th.
This revolver comes in a Civil War period J. Davy of Newark, New Jersey Holster, made for the Single Action Army’s predecessor the Model 1860 Army. This holster has been lightly modified in order to fit the SAA which has slightly different proportions. The holster remains in decent shape. There is the crackling exterior surface of aged leather as well as a lot of verdigris around the hardware. The stitching along the exterior seam has come apart. Nevertheless, it would look great on display with this revolver.
The overall condition is very good. Traces of original nickel finish are visible throughout and especially under the ejector rod and walnut grip. The action is excellent. The bore is in good condition with good rifling and a patina. The walnut grip is very nice, showing honest period use. Number match throughout. The small letter “G” inspection mark may be observed beneath the serial numbers on the trigger guard and grip frame. This is a very nice example of a civilian (commercial) Colt Single Action Army with the 7-1/2 barrel in .45 Colt.
