Description:
In 1878 John Browning designed a falling-block single shot rifle and was granted a patent the following year and he and his brother started making these rifles in their workshop in Ogden, Utah. In 1883, the General Manager of Winchester Repeating Arms Company traveled to Utah and negotiated the purchase of the single-shot design. Winchester subsequently introduced the rifle as the Model 1885. This rifle presented here was made in 1887 according to serial number research. It has seen better days and rough treatment but still is a piece of important history and could make a fine display or project gun. .45-70 Government
