Description:
Here we have an honest and true antique Marlin Model 1881 chambered in .40-60 Winchester caliber. While the 1873 Winchester is often called the “gun that won the West,” this rifle certainly didn’t win it by itself. There were plenty of other good firearms available, and the one that gave Winchester its most serious competition was the 1881 Marlin. This big rifle was years ahead of Winchester’s first big-bore offering (their 1886 Model), and was the first lever-action repeater built that was strong enough to handle the .45-70 Government cartridge. Until the introduction of Winchester’s 1886 Model, the ’81 Marlin was the only repeater to be had in some of the big-bore calibers of that time, and it had no competition for several years. Besides the .45-70, this man-sized rifle was also offered in a variety of other popular chamberings, including the .32-40, .38-55, .40-60 and .45-85. This particular example is chambered in .40-60 Winchester and is very good condition considering it's vintage. The receiver retains much of it's original finish while the barrel has lost much of it's finish and has taken on a handsome warmish grey patina. There is some high edge wear and a few areas where repeated rubbing has worn off the finish. The stock and forend are exceptionally nice and well preserved with basically zero cracks or dents....truly outstanding. The brass butt plate is tarnished but completely intact and dent free. There is a ding in the barrel about 7 1/2 inches from the muzzle on the right side (a photo of that mark is included). The 24 inch octagon barrel has a very good bore with strong rifling. The action works smoothly and locks up tightly. Sights are a windage adjustable buckhorn rear and a dovetailed blade at the front. If this Marlin could talk it would likely tell tales of being in a scabbard on a horse while taking great adventures. This rifle would make a great addition to an existing collection of cowboy guns or a great way to start a new collection.
