Description:
The famous Savage Model 1899 lever action rifle was introduced to American sportsmen in 1899. It was very well received and saw use in the later days of the American Frontier, Savage Model 1899 rifles and carbines also saw use in the Mexican Revolution and subsequent Mexican Civil War.

The great majority of Savage Model 1899 firearms were built as sporting rifles with many interesting variations. Savage Arms Co. also produced Model 1899 saddle ring carbines. However, these handsome and very handy saddle guns were evidently produced in small numbers. In the period of their use savage 1899 saddle ring carbines were ‘working guns’ for ranchers, hunters, and others in the West and along the ‘Border’ where they were subject to lots of heavy use and damage in hard environments. Today Savage Model 1899 Saddle Ring Carbines are coveted collector’s items by both Savage collectors and collectors of American lever action rifles in general and the majority of examples in collections are in heavily used condition.

This Savage Model 1899 Saddle Ring carbine, in .303 Savage caliber, built in 1914, is one of the very few examples of its type in excellent original condition.

The Roe Clark Savage factory letter states this Savage model 1899 'Carbine' was accepted from the factory on march 14, 1914. It was shipped March 21, 1914 to the Simmons Hardware Company, St.Louis, Missouri. Simmons was a large firearms distributor selling Colt revolvers, Savage rifles, etc. to arms dealers west of the Mississippi River.

CONDITION: This factory original carbine retains 98% strong original factory barrel blue with all markings crisp as they should be and an excellent bore. The frame retains 96%+  strong high polish factory blue finish with a few handling marks and a few age marks on the bottom of the frame. The lever retains nearly all of its very slightly faded original color casehardening. The breech block retains excellent natural steel finish. All mechanical functions are excellent. All screws are in excellent condition with original finish. The carbine buttplate retains 90% original high polish factory blue finish. The walnut stock and forend retain all their original factory ‘varnish’ finish with some light handling marks and an old scratch on the right side of the wrist.  The raised flats at the forward end of the buttstock retain crisp edges.

Collectors consider a factory original high condition Savage Model 1899 Saddle Ring Carbine like this a desirable piece and a considerable rarity. This Savage would go well in any collection of high condition American lever action rifles and would be pretty hard to up-grade. This carbine has been in a private New England collection since 1985.
