IT IS EASY TO BUY THE WRONG GUN WITH COSTLY ISSUES.  At Vintage Firearms, Inc. (VFI) we inspect each gun before purchase, our 4 gunsmiths clean and service each gun as needed, and on most guns, we strip the actions to the smallest parts, Ultrasonic clean and scrub all parts to shiny metal, inspect all parts for integrity and function, make any replacements or repairs necessary, lubricate and reassemble, providing VFI CERTIFIED GUNS, a $275 service in our shop.  VFI CERTIFIED GUNS have a 90-day mechanical warranty providing confidence you are buying a fine shotgun that will provide years of service in the field.  NONE of the other sellers provide this service.  Additionally, most of the early American 16 gauge guns were short chambered for 2 9/16” shells.  PRESENTLY IT IS DIFFICULT, IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE, TO FIND 2 ½” 16GA. SHELLS TO PURCHASE.  BECAUSE OF THIS, VFI GUNSMITHS HAVE CAREFULLY MEASURED THE BARREL WALL THICKNESS AHEAD OF THE CHAMBER, AND WHENEVER IT IS SAFE, HAVE LENGTHENED THE CHAMBERS TO 2 ¾” AND EXTENDED THE FORCING CONES TO 1 ½” TAPERS SO THAT YOU CAN SHOOT MODERN 2 ¾” FIELD LOADS THROUGH OUR GUNS.  This is a $360 service in our shop.  Modern chambers and long forcing cones make for safe shooting with softer recoil and better patterns, which benefit the shooter and preserve the integrity of these fine older doubleguns. Other important factors when buying a shotgun is the condition of the metal, screws, wood, and bores.  We provide the most comprehensive photography and specifications in the marketplace to guide you in making an informed choice. Just remember, nowhere is it more apparent than in the gun world…you get what you pay for!  If you want an upland gun you can rely on, buy one that is field ready and can safely shoot modern, available field loads.

Ithaca Gun Company's last model of double shotgun was the "NEW ITHACA DOUBLE", or NID model.  Built from 1926 to 1949, only 45,000 were produced in all gauges and grades.  Ithaca guns are special amongst the American double guns, as they are superb mechanically, equal to other makers in quality, had wood far more figured, grade for grade, than their competitors, and checkering patterns that simply overshadowed the next best maker.  The NID action is brutish in strength, second only to Winchester’s Model 21, and graded guns are nicely engraved with game scenes and scroll. Vintage Firearms is pleased to offer this Ithaca Grade 2 with extractors, SN431607, retaining all factory original metal finishes. Built in 1926, this gun is an excellent example of a 96-year-old vintage American side by side. Weighing 6lbs 15oz and featuring 28” Krupp Steel barrels, this is a quick gun, carefully crafted to balance 1/8” ahead of the hinge pin for dynamic handling characteristics that can only be attained by the hand-finishing methods of days gone by. The gun is mechanically excellent and VFI Certified, with crisp triggers (breaking cleanly at 5 and 6lbs respectively), engraved screws properly clocked along the axis of the gun, barrels tight on the hinge pin and breech face with the top lever way right of center. The lightly figured wood is solid, with no cracks and just a few field marks, and has Ithaca's sharp checkering, a very nice hand-rubbed oil finish, and an ebony forend tip tops it all off in a very nice fashion. The bores are excellent and shiny with long forcing cones and 2 3/4" chambers. They are choked a very useful SK/M, the barrel shows a few handling marks while the receiver exhibits plenty of case color especially around the fences, top lever, cocking indicators, breech face and water tables, there is some thinning on the underside surfaces. The game scene engraving is clear and crisp. The stock has modern dimensions and has a new genuine Silvers pad fitted. The best thing about Ithaca NID guns besides their strong mechanics is they are still affordable.  What a great American example of the gunmaker’s art for you to take to the field next season, and to break clays with between now and then.  Thanks for looking!
