Description:
***   SOLD   ***   This gun, number 12002, was made circa 1872 and represents a beautiful example of the very individual hammerguns that Westley Richards became famous for in the last quarter of the 19th Century. Their trademark style was the use of 'bar-in-wood' stocking combined with a 'crab joint'.   Nicely engraved with fluted percussion style fences and partial coverage on action and breech end of barrels. A very individual and highly 'shootable' gun for either game or clays.   ***    The action is of Westley Richards' patented design and features: Top lever opening, operating the famous Westley Richards patented single bolt, engaging a 'Doll's Head' top extension; Bar-in-wood stock with 'crab joint'; Double triggers; Bar action, rebounding locks; Low level shaped hammers; 'Deeley' forend catch. Gun weighs 6lb 14oz.  Toplever engraved ‘WESTLEY RICHARDS PATENT’.   ***   The highly figured nitro Damascus barrels are 30" in length, chambered for 2 ½ " (65mm) cartridges and are of brazed 'dovetail' lump construction with soft soldered ribs. Top rib is of the smooth, concave, game type. The rib is inscribed “Westley Richards 170 New Bond St. London” and separately “Patent”. The bores are essentially clean but retain a few small vestigial pits. London reproof for 2 ½” nitro powder cartridges. The right barrel has a bore diameter of 0.734 with a constriction of 0.000 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.033. The left barrel is bored 0.735 and has a constriction of 0.000 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness 0.034. Urban legend notwithstanding Cylinder is a very effective choke and can bust clays or fold up upland game very effectively. Ideal for upland game or clays.   ***   The original straight hand stock and splinter forend are crafted from highly figured walnut and nicely finished with crisp checkering and only a few minor handling marks. The stock has neutral cast, features a vacant, white metal, rectangular oval and is finished with a steel butt plate and engraved screws. It appears to be the original butt plate. It has a 'Deeley' forend catch and the forend features a carved horn tip. Stock dimensions are 14-1/4” by 1-9/16” by 2-1/16”. Neutral cast.   ***   This is a very handsome and great handling bar-in-wood hammergun from one of Britain’s premier gunmakers. It is in wonderful condition for its age and will be a desirable hammergun for shooter’s and collectors alike. You will be proud to uncase it at the range or carry it for a day afield. ***  Please note that the photographs are part of the description. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws.
