Description:
U.S. Model 1841 "Mississippi Rifle" in .54 caliber cap and ball.  The U.S. Model 1841 percussion rifle is regarded by many collectors as the most handsome of all of the U.S. military rifles of this period, and during the time which it was manufactured it was considered the finest U.S. Military arm of it's kind.  It received the "Mississippi Rifle" nickname from it's succesful use by a Mississippi regiment under the command of Jefferson Davis during the Mexican War.    made the Model 1841 from 1845 until 1848, with total production reaching about 10,000 rifles.  This would be the only U.S. contract arm  This particular example  remains in 100% original condition.  This Mississippi Rifle shows a handsome and consistent patina on all of it's metal parts.  Judging by the visible wear and handling marks it appears that this Model 1841 was issued and used in combat.  It is early enough to have seen action in the last year of The Mexican War and then again in the American Civil War.  All of the factory markings on the lockplate are still intact and 100% legible, and both of the original cartouches are still visible on the left side of the stock, although a little faint.  All of the original brass hardware is still intact and in great shape, showing a very nice aged mustard-yellow color.  The upper barrel band, triggerguard, patchbox, and lock bar on the left side of the stock are stamped with a small inspection letter "G", while the middle barrel band inspection letter has been worn away.  The buttplate is marked on the top tang with "U.S." .  The bore in this Model 1841 is lightly pitted throughout and the rifling is faint but there.  The original nipple is intact and the flash hole is clear into the barrel.  All of the hardware on this Mississippi Rifle is 100% original, including the brass tipped steel ramrod.  The Walnut stock is in great shape overall, free from any cracks, repairs, or major damage.  The wood shows various small dents and handling marks consistent with the rest of the rifle, and the grain is still open as this stock has never been sanded or "improved" by anyone along the way.  The lock on this rifle is in good working order with both the half and full-cock notches intact and a solid original hammer. This is a very neat all-original U.S. Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle that likely saw combat in two major wars between the Mexican War and American Civil War.  One can only imagine what history this rifle has seen.  If you have been looking for a handsome yet affordable all-original example of this important U.S. Military arm for your collection
