Description:
EXCEPTIONALLY RARE 4" BARREL .41 COLT CENTER FIRE NEW LINE REVOLVER WITH LOADING GATE AND WITH BRITISH RETAILER MARKINGS, #7XXX, MADE 1878. Only about 7,000 New Line revolvers were made in .41 caliber and of those probably most were in .41 Rim Fire.  Additionally, nearly all of production was made with the short 2 1/4" barrel. The 4" barrel on any New Line revolver is extremely rare, but much more so on the limited production big .41 caliber and yet even more rare in .41 Center Fire! I don't believe more than a handful of these were produced by Colt and very few have survived to the present time. I have seen a few in .38 caliber over the years, but I don't recall ever seeing a 4" .41 caliber. This example is marked on the right side of the barrel F. T. Baker...London. Baker was a gun maker and retailer at the time and obviously sold this Colt from his London shop. Interestingly, this revolver has the thumb notched loading gate which very few New Lines were fitted for. The assembly number on the inside of the gate matches the assembly number on the frame under the grips. The serial number is also on the frame under the grips and the cylinder number matches that. Overall metal surfaces are bright and it is hard to tell where the nickel leaves off and the bright metal begins. There are a few pin prick isolated pits.  that are very scattered and minor. It appears to have been cleaned somewhat a very long time ago and stored away as there is still an old yellowed hardened film of grease on parts of the revolver (which I have not tried to clean off). The Colt address is on the barrel top and "41 CAL C" is on the frame just below the cylinder on the left side.- the "C" stands for Center Fire.  Rosewood grips show some light handling, but are not chipped or cracked and fit perfectly. Fine cylinder pin and mechanics. Bore is about excellent. Has the correct tiny patent dates in the flute under the cylinder pin on the bottom of the barrel. I can guarantee most of the most advanced Colt collections don't have a 4" barrel New line in .41 Center Fire with matching loading gate! One of the rarest Colts I've ever offered. I don't expect to see another.
