Description:
The Model 1905 4th Change is one the forebearers of the world famous Model 10. It represented the fifth and final version of the Model 1905 series before the revolvers transition into the Victory Revolver of World War II. According to the Standard Catalogue of Smith & Wesson 4th Ed., the 4th Change was “built on the square butt K-frame with 5 screws, a 4-, 5-, or 6-inch pinned barrel, blue or nickel finish, forged round blade front sight, with a flattened top strap with a square-notch-cut rear sight for service sights” (i.e. fixed sights). Controls are the 0.265-inch serrated service trigger and 0.265” checked hammer. Target models with adjustable sights were also available. Cylinder length was an average of 1.56”. Heat treatment began at serial number 316,648. In total, 758,296 of this model were produced between 1915 and 1942. The revolver above has the 5-inch barrel. It features a very nice blue finish which has worn of the years from holster wear or use. Still, it retains the majority of the finish, which is impressive. The back strap was stamped “U.S.I.R. 55”. Below this, a small stenciller was used to engrave the name “A.K. Hines”. The “U.S.I.R.” is believed to be a partial acronym for the United States Internal Revenue Service, though this is not known for certain. The number of course is the individual revolver’s inventory number. The barrel exhibits some holster wear on both sides of the barrel, but mostly on the left side. The edges of the cylinder also exhibit holster. There is one notable spot of finish wear on the left side of the frame, below and to the right of the cylinder release button. The turn ring on the cylinder suggests the bolt tends to pop up quickly. The grips are in excellent shape, but do exhibit some wear on the bottom, suggesting these may be the original grips. The hammer and trigger show some signs of wear in the case hardening, but very little. The bore is in pristine condition. It should provide the user with superb accuracy.
