Description:
General Specs: Winchester, Year 1885, .38-40 (.38WCF), 8lb 8oz, LOP 12 7/8"
Serial Number: 167592 1/2 A

The Winchester Model 1873, known as “The Gun That Won The West”, was produced from 1873 through 1919 with a total of 720,000 made.  Here we have an amazing find…a Cody Firearms Museum documented Model 1873 rifle with 4 special-ordered features and in remarkable condition (we have an official Cody letter ordered and will ship with the rifle).  IT EVEN HAS A UNIQUE SERIAL NUMBER, A RESULT OF TWO RECEIVERS BEING MARKED WITH THE SAME SERIAL NUMBER AND THE FACTORY’S METHOD OF DIFFERENTIATING THE TWO!  This Winchester Model 1873, sn167592 1/2 shipped in 1885, is photo documented to have all factory original parts, with photos of serial numbers, assembly numbers, including the cutout for the top tang showing the assembly number of the stock, tang, and buttplate.  The photos of the lower tang will show the assembly numbers and the 3 “XXX” marks denoting the special-order deluxe wood.  There is no shortage of Winchester Model 1873 rifles for sale on the internet and at the collector gun shows.  Most are standard rifles, often badly worn, poorly cared for, with pitted bores, broken stocks and forends, restored with mis-matched parts, and no special-order features.  The Cody info sheet will show the standard length (24”) FULL OCTAGON BARREL, SET TRIGGER, FANCY STOCK, FOLDING PEEP SIGHT, AND CASE COLORED RECEIVER.  THE FOLDING PEEP SIGHT IS THE RARE #62B TANG SIGHT (one recently sold on EBAY for over $1100!).  In George Madis’ book on the Winchester Model 1873 he details out special ordered features to demonstrate just how rare special-order guns can be.  He states one of each 600 rifles shipped with upgraded wood, one of every 26 rifles with set triggers, AND HE MENTIONS FEW WERE EVER SHIPPED WITH CASE COLORED RECEIVERS.  8 of 10 rifles were shipped in .44 caliber, and the .32 caliber shipped 4 times more often than the .38 caliber…meaning few were shipped in the .38-40 caliber.  The best investment Winchesters have a few things in common; rarity, desirable features, originality, and factory original condition.  This beautiful rifle hits a home run on all areas.  The barrel and magazine tube retain about 30% original blue turning brown, the action shows 60% case color showing with patina, the lever and hammer showing 90% case color turning dark, and the highly figured XXX wood still retains most of its oil finish with only light handling marks and a few scratches…no cracks or repairs.  THIS IS A VFI CERTIFIED RIFLE, WITH A 90 DAY MECHANICAL WARRANTY.  We have disassembled and Ultrasonic cleaned this rifle, inspected all parts for viability and function, properly lubricated all parts, took some photographs, and reassembled for your use or display.  This 1873 is fully functional with AN EXCELLENT BORE, RATING 9 OUT A 10, with strong rifling and a shiny bore, no pitting.  IT IS A RARE FIND IN AN ANTIQUE BLACK POWDER RIFLE TO HAVE AN EXCELLENT, SHINY BORE!  What a great antique rifle from the Wild West Days, when cowboys and settlers counted on their Winchester for food and survival.  If this rifle could only talk….
Don’t miss out on this great investment opportunity that is way more fun and stable than the stock market or your local bank CD’s.  Thanks for looking!
