#1395 Springfield 1873 Trapdoor SPORTING RIFLE, 40/65 caliber (40-2-1/2” Sharps Straight) with Ex.Fine+ bore and tight solid action, 30” medium heavy full octagonal barrel. Very scarce 1880s sporting rifle being a fully original conversion of the standard 1873 Springfield military rifle as done by the Eli Whitney Firearms company on the orders of the huge New York based distributors, Harley&Graham. Apparently, these are the ONLY fully documented trapdoor conversions, as noted in the Fladerman book (9th Edition, page 582). Only 300 of these handsome sporting rifles were made in 1883, most being either 45Govt …or the extremely accurate 40-2-1/2”SS. Fitted with standard open sights, the rear sight is the Lawrence style elevated ladder as seen on Sharps carbines, but having a full buckhorn aperture …and the front sight being the Rocky Mountain open blade style. Checkered at the wrist and forestock, Schnauble tipped nose with buffalo horn inset, and the buttplate with cleaning rod trap, standard trigger. These Springfield-Whitneys were VERY nice looking rifles, well balanced, and being very popular calibers in their day and still very viable today for most North American game. This specimen has liberal traces of original thin blue on the barrel, VG wood, no pitting of mention, and would be a VERY decent addition to any 1880s sporting rifle collection as well as a Trapdoor collection. Twenty times rarer than a Sharps 1874 rifle, easily as attractive of a gun, and MUCH easier to find parts for if damaged. VG++ $3195
