Description:
This early Lefever E-grade, s/n 11566, was manufactured in 1889.  The stock is made of nicely-grained English walnut and retains its original finish.  The wood-to-metal fit is exceptional.  The wood behind the locks is solid and free of petroleum-based oil contamination.  The wood underneath the buttplate is pristine, retaining its penciled serial number, a confirmation of original wood and finish.  The checkering also appears to be original.  The gun is a boxlock with false sideplates, and features cocking indicators.  It has what is often characterized as a pivot lever release action.  The receiver and sideplates have the natural patina of a gun of this age.  They do not have any scratches or pitting.  The engraving, which is of a simple symmetrical pattern, is deeply cut and thus remains crisp.  The classic Lefever hunting dog would not be added to the E-grade for a couple of years.

The 30-inch barrels are made of fine (3-bar) Damascus steel.  They have 2-3/4-inch chambers, and are both choked full (030).  The bore diameters of both barrels are .752 inches.  The wall thicknesses of the right barrel measured at 9 inches from the muzzle are .036/.036/.040 (top/side/bottom), and at the middle of the barrel are .037/.035/.040.  The wall thicknesses of the left barrel are .036/.035/.040 and .048/.040/.045, respectively.  The bores are bright and have no pitting.  The exteriors of the barrels are flawless, as reconditioned.  The gun weighs 7 pounds 12 ounces.  The DAC is 2 inches and the DAH is 3 inches.  The length of pull from the front trigger to the end of the original buttplate is 14-1/4 inches.  Cast is neutral.  The left trigger pulls at 3-1/2 pounds and the right a 4 pounds.  The gun locks up tightly and all serial numbers, 11566, match.

The price does not include shipping costs paid by buyer.  The inspection period is 7 days from receipt.  This shotgun has been fired using shells manufactured by RST Corporation designed for use in Damascus-barreled shotguns.  However, as for any antique shotgun, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by his or her own gunsmith before firing, and then only use shells that produce pressures for which the gun was designed.  Please do not hesitate to call with questions at 703-625-4830.
